Feeling Beachy

Photos in the ocean always look so fun! Image by Apertura.

Our engagement shoot is occurring in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico, when we are on vacation next week. Such an opportunity is only occurring because my photographer is a friend and former college roommate.

That game plan:
The morning of the shoot we'll take the bus into town and shoot for a few hours. I hope to find an outdoor market and some fun alleyways to explore. I hate looking like a sweaty mess so we'll take a break in the middle of the day when it's all hot and rainy and gross. We'll resume shooting sometime after dinner and finish the evening all wet and sandy on the beach as the sun goes down.

Would you mind helping me choose which outfit would be best for our photo adventures? Vote yes on the outfits you think I should wear, no on the ones I should avoid. It would be best to vote yes for only two outfits, because voting yes for all of them doesn't really help me with my decision.

Outfit #1
The puffy sleeves might be a little trendy, but I love the bright color. But will my sweaty armpits just soak right through the material?

Outfit #2
This outfit isn't quite as bright and colorful, but it's sweet. The neckline makes me feel young and pretty.

Step #3
I'm still bolero hunting for this dress, but it's so beachy and bright. Who wouldn't want to splash around in the waves and frolic in the sand while wearing this?

Outfit #4
I'm not keeping the shoes. So try not to fall in love with them like I already have. This dres is all nautical and preppy, it even has little anchors on the buttons. I ordered cheapie $15 white flats from Target after I admitted to myself that the mustard colored flats just weren't working.

What would you recommend?

Oh, I love them all! My top two picks are the white dress (for the beach shoot) and the navy dress (for around town) ... I think the navy would be a great "neutral" for all of the color that you'll find around town :) Hope you have fun taking your pictures and on vacation!

Dress #4!!!!! Love, love, love!!!

Not trying to be judgmental here, but are you sure you want to wear capri pants for a photoshoot? They do that whole cut you in segments in the thickest part of your calves, which make your calves look thicker, and always make your legs look shorter and stumpier. I always say screw it and wear them in daily life too, because they're comfy and cute and perfect in the summer, but is it the look you want to be caught on camera? Capris are rarely the most flattering option. Just a thought!

definitely #3. then i'm torn between #2 and #4. hmmm.......let's go with #4. i even like it with the yellow shoes!

I say go for no. 3...it's perfect for Mexico...esp. if you can find a cute matching blue bolero. I think it's always best to wear brighter colors for pictures, but esp. in Mexico...there is so much color there, you don't want to seem plain.

I like the blue top in no. 1, but agree with no capris. Maybe a cute skirt? I think the small print in no. 2 wouldn't be ideal for photography. And I really like dress no. 4, it's adorable, but I think it's too dark for a beachy, Mexican photo shoot.

Btw...I can really tell in these photos how much weight you've lost. Good job!

Total honest opinion:

navy dress with the mustard flats if fab. Seriously, wouldn't change a thing!

bright colored dress is super fun. Can you get away with a pashmina to cover your arms? That way you could kind of play around with it and not take away from the dress.

I second the hesitation on the cropped pants--especially cropped+flat shoes... I love the look of a nice long, structured jean with cute heels in a photoshoots. I think it really holds it together and brings the focus back up instead of on your bare legs. I totally get the dresses in Mexico, but I would also go for a covered leg look as well!

Oh my, I cannot wait to see how these turn out! Have a great time!

they are all so cute! i think i'm the only one who likes #2. i think it's really sweet. i like #2 and the navy dress (and i love the mustard flats!)

ok i'm going for #2 and #4

this is going to come strictly from a photographer perspective. #1 and #2 are very similar but since i picked #4 i think the lighter, breezier color will be good for the other outfit.

i LOVE #3 dress, the pattern is beautiful. and SO mexico. BUT!!! since it's sleeveless... it'll make the arms look big. esp if you are sideways (like your arms are thrown over his shoulders, etc) and while you are very cute and thin - the camera is a DIRTY LIAR to even the skinniest of girls. trust me on this.

i don't think the color is too dark though - not if you're shooting at sunset. that will make a nice warm contrast for the pics. have him wear something yellow or orange. that will be pretty!!! oooh i can't wait!

Two and Four.

One doesn't do anything for me and the colourful dress is a bit too graphic (from a photographer's point of view. Wild prints are a bit distracting in portraits, they pull attention away from your faces where it should be. Especially when your face is so gorgeous.)

Two and Four are so sweet, fun and girly and seem to suit your personality much more than the other two options.

And I don't think that the capri pants are unflattering in Two at all, you have a gorgeous figure and it shows.

LOVING the #4 dress - so cute! If you're not keeping those shoes, get something similar because the splash of colour really works. Red would be great too. I also like #2, which is cute and pretty. Not a fan of the boldness of the third dress for photos...I think the PP is right that it's too distracting!

Love number four! And I fell in love with the flats in an instant. I definitely think a colorful shoe will make the outfit sparkle!

I love #4, and I also think you should go with colored flats. I think the yellow looks really nice and the navy/yellow should go well with any kind of scenery you find.

#3 would be great for the beach scenes but I wouldn't use it for around town because it's very distracting. I actually own this dress and love it.

Can't wait to see pictures!

I vote for outfit #3. I think it's fabulous that you're going to Mexico for the engagements!!! Steve and I went on our honeymoon there and loved it.

My favorites are the two dresses. But I'm obsessed with cute summer dresses and despise capris.

Outfit #4, hands down!

Definitely no.4 and I agree that the mustard shoes are perfect. White flats might be a little bit too match, the yellow give it some edge.

I'm a fan of two and four.....the shoes almost really don't matter, since more than likely will be getting up close picture....but I do like the mustard shoes. lol

#2 and #4 for sure!! Of course I also think the mustard heels are perfect. Good luck with the decision, no matter what you wear you will look fabulous :)

What happened to everyone not falling in love with the mustard shoes?

Thanks to everyone on the feedback, I appreciate all of it, and I am really really doubting my capri choice, in a good way. It sounds like I may have a little bit more shopping to do before I make my final decision.

miss capitol hill-It's been a long hard fight, but I'm happy that I will be able to feel good about my engagement photos!

chriselda-I'm loving your feedback. I'm glad you aren't vetoing the white dress based on pattern, I have a yellow bolero coming to me in the mail that I think will work perfectly as long as it fits.

ruby-You reminded me that I have the perfect red heels. And I already own them. bonus.

Yes! Navy dress. A pair of bright green shoes would look good too.
Where did you get the dress? I'd so love one similar...
