Prioritizing

This is where I work. I love the location!

I'm going to ask my work to give me less hours. It kind of scares me to do it, because I have a loyalty to this place and I want to help them out when they really need it, but I can't plan my wedding and work this much. I was just going to suffer through it, but That Groom has actually started encouraging me to be a little more direct in my request for less hours.

I wanted to work as much as possible and attempt to pay off my car before the wedding, but at this point I haven't even made my invitations so there might not BE a wedding to go to.

This might seem a little spoiled to some of you who are working full careers and would give an arm and a leg for some extra time. I'm only home for 2 months and waitressing right now, and there are definitely days when they could survive without me.

I'm just....nervous. What do I do if they say no?

Where does the wedding fall in your list of what is important? What have you done to prioritize?

I don't think it necessarily seems spoiled, it's just that you're right, we all have different priorities. If you have the option to take off more time, then go for it! The worst they can do is say no, and it can't hurt to ask. If given the opportunity, I would have loved to have it, but I know there was NO WAY I would have been allowed! Plus, for me, getting my Ph.D. ranks way higher as a priority than the wedding itself -- my husband (a doctor) and have always put our education at the top, and while now that we our married, our marriage comes first, the actual wedding day itself and all the hoopla that came with it was fantastic, but there was no way that I was going to let my dedication to the laboratory and my training as a scientist suffer at the account of making some table numbers.

Honestly, looking back, I have no idea how I managed to get everything done and still be in the lab 80+ hours/week, and silkscreen (real silkscreen, which is WAY more time consuming than Gocco) all my invitations/menus/paper products), hand crochet all 90 yarmulkes, design and make all the votive wraps we used as escort cards, etc etc. Truthfully, in the 3 months leading up to the wedding, I never slept more than 4 hours/night.

But, you do what you have to do to get it done, and cutting back my hours in the lab was never an option. If if is for you... go for it. If they say no, though, you will find time to get it done, honest. Somehow, you always fine time. I am living proof of that. :)

I am still thinking I might be insane taking and starting a new job just 2 months before the wedding, but I couldn't really turn down the opportunity.

So I did as much as humanly possible before starting. (Though I still have some things sitting there staring at me). Sometimes it just helps to take a week and just devote it to getting everything done.

oh sweetie, yes. i understand completely....your wedding is before mine, right?

i am struggling trying to get my invitations together too...there is a monsterous conversion going on at work, and it keeps me very busy most days. by the time i get home in the evenings, i'm worn out and want to do nothing but be a lump on my bed.

i told my mother just this past sunday that september 30th will be my last day. i dont see how i can finish up getting this wedding together, prepare and move all my belongings 800+miles away, began earnestly looking for a new job, go to my cousin's wedding, ect, ect AND work full time.

it just does not seem possible. when i outlined it like that, she understood. yes, i could really use the additional check that working into October would provide, but for my sanity this is best.

i'm sooo excited about resigning. i havent loved my job in a long time, so i'm looking forward to this change! :)

I think if you can afford to work less hours, and they'll let you do it, then go for it!! Especially if you still need to make invitations!

The wedding is a priority, but since I knew I'd have to plan it around my work schedule, that's what I did. Luckily, we're not TOO busy, and I can take off a few hours here and there.... so it's okay. :-)

I have 6 months before my post-grad internship starts so I am doing all my preparing for the wedding now (and its 14 months away).
Lots of people think its too early, but I need to plan now so I can concentrate on my internship during the intense months. I think that's having my priorities in order with respect to my career and wedding

Man would I love to work less over the next couple of months! Unfortunately they seem to be piling it on worse than ever...

P.S. I don't think it's spoilt to want something. Spoilt to me is about how you behave if you don't get it...

Is that the Lodge in Othello? If it is.. I've never seen a picture of it like this. I guess I didn't realize how pretty it was even though I had my prom dinner there and have been there a few other times.

I'm really behind on my google reader so just got to this... did you ask yet?

Here's my advice; Don't suffer through it if you don't need to! And it never hurts to ask. If they say no, then so be it. at least you asked :)

At this point in my life, my career still takes a high precedence so although I will probably take a few days off, I don't think I could sacrifice anymore.

ethidium-I am absolutely in everything you have done (and everything you are doing!) I will think of you every time I want to complain about driving in to work.

raybouldfamily-It's actually Cave B in Quincy Washington. We did look into the Lodge though, it was so pretty when Aubree had her reception there.

tiffany-The worst they can do is say no. My new mantra.
